Elevate Your Substack: Why a Custom Domain Matters and How to Get One
Reasons to Switch Your Substack Domain from name.substack.com to newsletter.name.com, and HOW to do it.
A friend of mine recently changed his Substack link from (name).substack.com to newsletter.(name).com. I saw the change on his profile for the first time and it got me thinking..
This looks SO much better. I wanted to do the same but I didn’t know how. So I did some research and made it happen.
I want to share with you why I think you should do the same if you haven’t already.
I truly believe this is going to boost your writing business and credibility, especially when you share the link outside of Substack.
But First.. Why Make The Switch?
Professional Appearance
A custom domain like newsletter.name.com gives your newsletter a polished and professional look. It demonstrates to your audience that you are serious about your publication and have invested in creating a unique identity for your content.
Brand Consistency
Using a custom domain ensures that your newsletter aligns with your overall branding strategy. If your website is at name.com, having your newsletter at newsletter.name.com creates a cohesive brand presence and makes it easier for your audience to recognize and trust your content.
Improved Memorability
Custom domains are easier to remember and share. A domain like newsletter.name.com is simple, straightforward, and more likely to stick in the minds of your readers, making it easier for them to return and recommend your newsletter to others.
Increased Trust
Readers may be more likely to subscribe to and engage with a newsletter that has a custom domain. It gives the impression of a well-established and trustworthy publication, reducing any hesitation they might have about subscribing to a subdomain.
Better SEO and Discoverability
Custom domains can improve your search engine optimization (SEO). When your domain contains keywords relevant to your content, it can help improve your search rankings, making it easier for new readers to discover your newsletter through search engines.
Ok. Sold. Now How Do I Do It?
Substack has a more in depth guide here:
If you already have a domain name that’s not Google Domains or Square Space try the guide above.
If you have a Square Space domain or if your domain was migrated over to Square Space from Google Domains feel free to DM me and I will send you my free How to Guide on how to do it. It’s a lot shorter and easier to follow than Substacks and you’ll be up and running in no time. It’s free and you do not need to subscribe. I just want to help.
I hope this post has opened your eyes up to the power of this and influenced you to make this change. I wish someone told me about this sooner but I’m glad I stumbled on it.
I’ve been thinking of doing this for a while. Your reasoning is the motivation I need to do it! 🙏
