Episode 8: The Power of Community in Mental Health

A true story on how community changed the game of mental health. Featuring direct advice from Dr. Rangan Chatterjee.

Hello Everyone and welcome to the 8th episode of the Motivation Monday Podcast!

Imagine tuning in to a short pep talk at the start of every week to get you in the right frame of mind to tackle your goals and ease your way through the week without anxiety and procrastination.

That’s exactly what this is!

For those of you who don’t know me super well, I have been studying human behavior for over 15 years and have learned quite a bit about why we do what we do. It’s allowed me to peek into the operating system of our minds and fine tune what’s going on in there so that we can live with less chatter and distractions, and feel more confident and enthusiastic about what we’re doing in life.

If you want secrets to “hack” your mind and enhance your self-development, this is absolutely the place for you!

Each week, I’ll be releasing an episode on Monday mornings with tips and tricks to hit your week with your best foot forward

MM Podcast EP 8: The Power of Community in Mental Health

Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

Hello to all your listeners and welcome to yet another Monday! A quick reminder that there’s no reason to dread the week ahead, instead, we can look at it with a sense of excitement to tackle our goals, learn new things, and share our talents with others. The choice is ours and we have the power to shift our thinking at anytime!

This week, I want to talk to you about an interview I watched recently with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. Dr. Chatterjee is a very well-known and respected doctor from the UK with over 20 years of medical expertise. He focuses on getting to the root cause of the problem and puts healing first, which is part of the reason why I was drawn to his work.

So why are we talking about a doctor on a motivation podcast?

During this interview, Dr. Chatterjee told a surprising story about one of his patients who was struggling.

You see, this man looked great on paper and had:

  • A reputable degree

  • A high paying salary

  • A nice car

  • Freedom to work when he wants

But he expressed to Dr. Chatterjee that something was missing. He felt like he lost his mojo, had no motivation, and oftentimes didn’t want to get out of bed.

After performing some tests on him and having them all come back normal, Dr. Chatterjee sat down with him to talk to him about what was really going on.

Together the two of them discovered that this man didn’t spend time with anyone else. He had friends, he just said he didn’t have any time to see them even though they all lived locally.

Dr. Chatterjee asked him to participate in an interesting experiment and advised him to make time for his friends and set aside time to meet up with them once per week

But there was a catch…

He told him to make an agreement with his friends that no phones would be used during that time and they would reserve that time just to connect with each other.

Dr. Chatterjee thought this would be the balance that he needed. Community is central. We feel deep down that we don’t need it and that we can do everything on our smart phones. But that’s not necessarily true.

Around a month later this man came back to see Dr. Chatterjee with a big smile on his face.

He said he felt great, had his mojo back, and felt a huge surge of motivation.

He said he had been meeting his friends for coffee once / week with no phones, just simple, fun discussion.

After three weeks, the group decided to play soccer together one evening.

The conclusion?

This man did not have an antidepressant deficiency

He had a friendship deficiency

As soon as that hole was filled, he saw some real healing take place.

So what’s the moral of the story?

How you feel is one of the most important aspects of your health

And who you surround yourself with usually has a great impact on how you feel overall.

Also, if we find ourselves to be alone, and surrounded by no one, that can cause us to live in our heads more, and lose motivation as well as a sense of purpose

That’s why it’s so important to make careful choices of who you surround yourself with and who you talk with most.

A great community can be the difference in whether you feel successful, or not.

It all has to do with how YOU feel.

So this week, take some time to reflect on your community . If anyone stands out to be a huge help with supporting you, be sure to let them know.

I’d like to leave you this week with 3 incredible questions that Dr. Chatterjee asks himself every morning. It keeps him on the right track to feeling good and leading a purposeful life. He has also shared these questions with the majority of his patients and has had great feedback from them.

  1. What is the most important thing I have to do today?

  2. What am I grateful for?

  3. Which quality do I want to showcase to the world today?

I answer these questions every morning and it has changed the way my week flows! Here are my answers for today

  1. Publish this podcast episode, which I did!

  2. The ability to choose when I go to sleep and when I wake up almost every day

  3. Mindfulness - Being present to who or what is in front of me

If you’d like to answer these questions for yourself and share in the comments, feel free! I’d love to hear it.

Structure and planning like this is what keeps us grounded and able to keep going, even when things don’t align in the way we’d like.

It’s about preparation, not inaction.

Carry these questions with you this week as you smash your goals and I’ll see you next week with more tips and tricks to keep a healthy, motivated mind.

Have a great week everyone!

See you next Monday morning, same place!
