MM Podcast Episode 6: Why Pain Is Unavoidable (It's a good thing)
What if you could transform pain into inspiration? Find out how!
Hello Everyone and welcome to the 6th episode of the Motivation Monday Podcast!
Imagine tuning in to a short pep talk at the start of every week to get you in the right frame of mind to tackle your goals and ease your way through the week without anxiety and procrastination.
That’s exactly what this is!
For those of you who don’t know me super well, I have been studying human behavior for over 15 years and have learned quite a bit about why we do what we do. It’s allowed me to peek into the operating system of our minds and fine tune what’s going on in there so that we can live with less chatter and distractions, and feel more confident and enthusiastic about what we’re doing in life.
If you want secrets to “hack” your mind and enhance your self-development, this is absolutely the place for you!
Each week, I’ll be releasing an episode on Monday mornings with tips and tricks to hit your week with your best foot forward
Quick Announcement
Even though this podcast is only on its 6th episode, I’ve noticed that 100 of you are already tuning into these episodes each week. I’m so happy to have you here and hope that this short podcast is enhancing each week for you!
Let’s get into the episode.
MM Podcast Episode 6: Why Pain Is Unavoidable
Today, I want to talk to you about a fascinating piece of info that surprisingly came into my mind last week and not only wowed the **** out of me, but completely changed the way I look at things.
The thought was very simple.
It said: “Pain is unavoidable”
Why? I asked back
Here’s what came next
When you want to take action or make a change in life, the main thing that stops us is fear of experiencing pain or discomfort. In fact, our mind stops us because its goal is for us to avoid pain and seek only pleasure.
But here’s the problem…
Let’s say you choose not to take action on something new and uncomfortable. In making that decision, you may feel some relief and comfort upfront, especially if you decide to trade off that activity for something much more indulging, such as Netflix and chocolate (one of my favorites).
Sounds great so far right?
Something interesting happens once that high / stimulation / dopamine, whatever you want to call it wears off.
An internal mechanism within us remembers that we initially said no to that new thing we desired to start. You can call it the soul, inner you, higher self, or all of the above.
This internal self recognizes that in choosing to avoid this challenging new goal that you desired, you are disrespecting yourself.
Essentially you are saying to the universe “I’m not good enough to do this” , which oftentimes translate into the energy of “I am not good enough”. This sends a low vibration through you and you’ll notice that you feel bad shortly after.
These emotions can cause you to react in certain ways such as becoming:
More impatient
Irritable
Negative
Prone to Self-Sabotage
Prone to additive coping mechanisms
Likely to search for more comfort (causing the cycle to repeat)
That last one is actually one of the most dangerous because it can set us in a perpetual cycle on repeat that never ends.
So in this above example, your arc goes as follows
We can clearly see in this example that pain is not avoided.
Let’s check out the other angle.
What if we have a desire to try something new and challenging, and feel the fear, but decide to do it anyway
In this example, you will still experience pain and discomfort but it is usually only strongest at the beginning of starting something new.
What happens next is a bit magical
]The more time we spend doing that thing, the more comfortable we begin to feel with it and the less pain we feel actually doing it .
So right off the bat, it seems that this method does showcase some pain upfront
BUT
It seems to be a shorter lived form of pain
But that’s not the biggest reward…
The biggest reward comes from after we honored ourselves and spent time doing that thing.
We not only feel a sense of accomplishment but we have also:
Built trust with ourselves that we do what we say
Built respect for ourselves, convincing us of our value
Built up a sense of excitement and accomplishment (generates contagious positive emotions)
Proven to ourselves that we can survive trying new things
So with this angle, your arc goes as follows.
This last one is interesting because the more times we are willing to jump in the cold water and try something new, the more used to and comfortable we get with trying new things because we now have a proven track record that we will not only “survive” it but we also feel GREAT doing it!
So in this example we do have some discomfort at the beginning, but as we move into the middle and begin working on our goal, that pain begins to diminish almost instantly. Afterwards we not only feel amazing and have a sense of accomplishment, but we are rewarded with a magical positive energy that accompanies us for quite a while and enhances everything we do afterwards
So what does that mean?
When you decide to face your fear and accomplish your goals, you are not only taking the road LESS painful, but you’re also improving your own energetic state and sharing that energy with everyone around you.
Translation?
You’re improving yourself and the world when you TAKE ACTION.
So this week, I’d like you to keep this thought in mind as you tackle your goals.
Remember, if you face any hardships that scare you, confront them head on and stay brave with this newfound lesson in mind.
That’s it for this episode, I hope your jaw dropped like mine did when this info first came to me. Kick some ass this week and have a wonderful week everyone.
